@peterbrown I'm still paying for my 2 weeks in japan this past january, so I know! 🙂 I stayed with my former daughter inlaw and when we were out together she read for me and spoke to clarks in stores and stuff. But, when I was out on my own, it was still ok. Mostly, japanese do not have english and I did not use my phone. It was just fine everywhere. All I can say is excuse me and thank you very much. And be grateful at meals. At first, I just opened my wallet and asked people to take money and it was fine. 99% of the world is full of good and nice and decent people.
@gemlog I was in Japan before the days of smart photos and with no practical knowledge of the language you are functionally illiterate because you couldn’t even use a dictionary as the letters are so different. More than 20 years later, I understand English is much more prevalent and of course you can waft your phone at the text and it will tell you what it says!
