      If we're reaching the "statistical models themselves are gibberish and using them is stupid" stage on mastodon I'm going to have to peace out of here for a while again

      @grimalkina @mayintoronto Don't trust lawmakers to have any sense, but the obvious way to regulate is regulating automation of decisions based on outputs. Not regulating doing math.

      @mayintoronto I'd also just like to see the drafted regulation because like.....what are you regulating, math? Ridiculous

      @grimalkina *sigh*

      Regulations need to exist to protect human rights. Tools have never been the problem.

      @grimalkina @mayintoronto You could also very reasonably regulate/forbid aggregating the types and amount of data on a scale that gives disproportionate and inappropriate power over others.

      @grimalkina @mayintoronto Yes, it would have to be specific. My comments were about what the guiding principles for drafting those specifics would be, not language you could just write into a regulation.

      @dalias @mayintoronto having seen regulation drafting up close, it is really difficult. I would love to see an example of how you'd draft "forbidding aggregating data" and "decisions" and how you'd write a regulation that would define something like "giving inappropriate power". I suspect it would have to be very specific to be workable, and that specificity would undermine what you are imagining as powerful regulation
