@freakazoid I think servers blocking other servers (aka defederation) will continue to be the method to handle something like this. The entire point of this is to have choice, regardless of ideology and preference. I want the choice and option to follow Tumblr accounts, and if they start publishing ads in people’s feeds, then I can unfollow them. And if Tumblr as a whole becomes offensive or annoying, or finds an exploit that puts ads into my feed, I’ll block them.
@jon I guess I skipped a step - the question is whether the Fediverse is ever going to involve some kind of constitution/compact where we actually agree that certain behaviors are unacceptable and will result in defederation.
@jon At some point we need to decide if the Fediverse is just "everything that supports ActivityPub" or something more. If it's not more, then it's just a protocol and there is no Fediverse any more than there's an emailverse.
I realize people are concerned about corporations becoming interested in federated social and how they might ruin a good thing, but I think Tumblr adding ActivityPub support is probably a good thing. However, I am not thrilled about the prospect of platforms like Tumblr inserting ads into feeds, which I see as highly probable.
But if a collective of Mastodon Admins decided that the Fediverse doesn’t include #Tumblr, what would be the path forward?
You won’t ever get all Admins to defederate from Tumblr and Tumblr has 472 million registered users so they still have more users than the entire Fediverse currently has.
As an Admin or a smaller instance, I would certainly side with Tumblr over whatever the sad number of users this collective managed to pull together.
@jon Indeed, but to work against more powerful instances (like Tumblr or mastodon.social) will require concerted action, not a bunch of independent decisions to defederate.
@TracyRussellBlack I think you can just not follow any Tumblr accounts and you’re good. And I doubt people who do follow Tumblr accounts will boost ads. So it’s probably not a big issue if they do.
