But also, some, like Apple’s family mechanism, can be quite helpful in non-pathological situations.
Mint falling to standard marketing capture tactics was inevitable when they sold out to the Big Pink T.

Uhg, FFS Mint. I just got an email from Mint Mobile (my carrier) pestering me to setup a "Mint Family". The whole reason I'm on Mint is to get an affordable price *without* the bullshit of "family plans". A "family plan" is a tool of abuse, a way to spy on partners and children, hold threat of loss of access to one's own phone number (which, with SMS auth, is the backdoor to nearly everything) over them, to make it hard to leave and so leaving requires cooperation of the person you're leaving. "Family plans" should be fucking illegal.

@grumpybozo Yeah, they sound like handcuffs to me. They might be a little better than some other companies do, but any implementation of this that doesn't want to be an abuse vector needs to think adversarially of all the ways someone could use it to do harm and ensure they're mitigated. Not just say "hey, if it's convenient to people in good situations, it's fine".

@dalias Shared access to purchased items, convenient mechanism for authorization control for things like location and sharing. Members can opt out freely. Each associated cost is tied to whichever member made the purchase.

And yes, those features are golden handcuffs in a problematic family. They’re just conveniences in the many cases where people are happy and eager to remain entangled.
