   What fedi software is good these days for an "early Facebook" type experience - oriented towards mutual friend or family relationships and sharing photos and text updates privately in the scope of those relationships?

   I'm looking for something that's easy to self-host since the idea is to get folks off the practice of putting private photos and stuff on Somebody Else's Computer. Federation should work well to cache but not hold permanent copies of large image material from others' instances so that it's practical to use multiple instances not put everyone on one. And there should be finer grained access control than "all followers can see this".

     @MegaMichelle Friendica looked promising last I checked. Do you know how it handles federation of large media? Using AP isn't really important as long as it's interoperable with other sw of same class and doesn't require everyone agree on an authority to host their stuff.

     I don't think you can have fine-grained access control with the activitypub protocol yet, but friendica also speaks the diaspora protocol, in which you can do that.
