you know what the problem is with getting people on linux?
they are not motivated to take care of their computers, they don't care about learning how anything works or how to troubleshoot even basic shit
and that's fine, actually. Do you want to learn how to do maintenance work on your car? How to tune it? How to do repairs? No, of course not, because repairing and maintaining cars requires tools, is filthy work at times and you actually need to know how to disassemble and reassemble the stuff you're working on. I don't fucking care to do all that shit. I don't have the space or motivation for it.
So yea, makes sense that some people don't like doing the same tedious shit but for computers. They just want the thing to work and to do what it needs to. So I can't really blame anyone for not wanting to make the miracle hop to some other system they don't know shit about and deal with whatever stupid problems they might run into. Because I wouldn't do it either.
And that's really the problem of linux. It doesn't have a "just fucking works" type of workflow. Most things tend to work, but linux has the problem where every full moon or so, something goes wrong, and it goes wrong in the way where the solution is to do random terminal shit and about 2 hours of getting annoyed by stack overflow posts. Are they difficult? No, they just take some googling, and most veterans will probably have this type of shit committed to memory already. Is it annoying? Very.
So most people just choose to deal with microsoft's bullshit. I just wonder how long before windows has worse problems than linux.-

@Suiseiseki @fristi I'd say this thread is actually a pretty good illustration of some wrong assumptions "our side" makes when talking about this kind of thing; we might assume "normal" people know (or want to know) how computers, cars, whatever work and to be able to, you know, do things. The truth is, not only "normal" people don't know how shit works, they don't want to know.
You know that "hmm, this looks interesting, I wonder how it's done" feeling? Well, most people don't. They don't care how their computer, phone, car, tv, whatever works. Computers aren't for, well, doing computations and they don't want to learn how to use them, they don't want to mess around with them, experiment, try doing something fun, they want to be told "click on that circle thing to go to the internet" like some kind of brain dead zombies. People don't know that "the internet" is just a bunch of networked computers, they don't know what a server is (don't even get me started on discord "servers") they aren't aware that facebook/youtube/spotify run on a computer somewhere out there, ig it just exist in the air somewhere.
Same with any other machine, ask a randon person what kind of fuel injection their car uses (carb, single point, multi point, direct injection) and they'll freeze in fear. Speaking of which, you almost certainly have seen someone freeze at a meesage on a computer/phone/atm but when you read the thing aloud to them they suddenly know what to do.
And all this includes people that "work with computers", I've seen devs using vanilla google chrome with no extensions and not know how to open the fucking cmd and ping the fucking server.
Btwif this looks like one single massive hard to read sentence I'm really sorry bu that's how my brain thinks. Ig I could Ask ChatGPT™️ to rewrite it but I'd rather not even write anything than do that. Speaking of which, try explaining how LLMs are just massive statistical models predicting the next word in a text and you shouldn't trust them with anything important... Ok i'll stop here, sorry for the long rant.
TLDR we dramatically overestimate the cognitive abilities of an average person, also see image翠星石 likes this. -

Yes. It needs to be ready to run government agents over, or I need to be able to fix it to make it ready.
Yes, the tools and the mess and the oil is actually filthy.
Meanwhile, experiencing GNU is very clean and is very pleasant - once I get it working, it continues to work. -

@shitpisscum @fristi Don't worry, unlike a NPC, I can real such short paragraph easily.
I'm please you decided to not run proprietary software and SaaSS to taint it.
Most people have acceptable cognitive ability - they just choose not to use it.
