@meso @kaia "FOSS"bros will indeed be attracted to a proprietary alternative of discord.
It'll have to be good chat software to attract GNUbros. -

@kaia I will go further than simply "popular things are usually bad" and say "it is that bad things are more attractive to normies". Normies have objectively shit taste, if you want to appeal to them, the only way to do so is to be shit. -

@p @kaia i can tell you why matrix wont work as discord alternative:
Matrix Spaces dont feel like Discord Servers: Spaces are optional, can be avoided by directly joining to channels and are basically just a list of channels. It is not easy to manage rolles and users over multiple channels / a space and you cant make a welcoming structure like TS / Discord can do it.
Thats actually the main issue.
Next issue is Voice / Video Calls dont work out of the box, admins need to have some knowledge. (At least it was like that once)
Third issue is custom integrations, people would like to have an easy way to integrate bots, custom emojis and stuff, that can be done tho, but it is not easy and fun to do so and custom emojis arent well supported either
Imho those are issues which i dont really care about, i like matrix, but i can understand why people from discord ignore matrix thoAnother Linux Walt Alt likes this. -

some governments are starting to use matrix so maybe they'll be able to simplify things a bit more with the support
matrix is also federated which adds another layer of complexity not needed by something centralised like discord

@Jain @p @kaia >Spaces are optional, can be avoided by directly joining to channels
You can set a rule on a room that you have to be in a specific containing space to join it. I don't know the details, but I know it exists.
You can't make people automatically join contained rooms when they join a space though, but you can mark rooms as "suggested", and I really think there should be a client that interprets that as an auto-join.
>people would like to have an easy way to integrate bots
Good thing making a bot on account on matrix is exactly the same as making any other account, unlike Discord where they have a completely separate interface for it that, like almost everything else about account management, can only be accessed through a web browser.
The real problem with matrix is that all the servers suck and all the clients suck. It's a neat technical demo, for now.
