   What I'm unsure of if how a Mastodon Reply to this type of post interacts with the model

   @silverpill does the OP appear as FO to the mastodon user, does the Mastodon user reply with their FO collection?

     @django Top-level post in followers-only conversation appears as followers-only to everyone.

     How Mastodon reply is treated depends on an implementation. In Streams/Forte (reference impls), it is probably rejected, because they strictly enforce conversation audience. In Mitra its (incorrect) audience is ignored and it is treated as a FEP-171b compliant followers-only post.

     @django The mechanism can be tweaked further to improve compatibility, for example Add wrapping can be replaced with inbox forwarding (Mastodon supports inbox forwarding), or it can be replaced with Announce wrapping (supported by Lemmy and other forums). One can even send all three variants 😵💫

     @django Mitra wraps the Create activity in Add and sends to conversation participants. Participants that implement FEP-171b can try to fetch the wrapped Create by its id, although I don't remember if it works for Mastodon.

     I think Mastodon will also deliver Create directly to all mentioned users, so even if conversation participants don't implement FEP-171b, some messages will go through (as DMs I guess). Forte probably doesn't accept direct deliveries, otherwise moderation actions would be less effective. Mitra accepts direct deliveries, because we want better compatibility.

     @silverpill thanks, I tend to prefer the incorrect but interoperable version.

     So in Mitra under this model, your server receives a FO reply from a mastodon user, I’m guessing without object proofs, how can mitra forward this FO message to your audience?
     Or how can non FEP-171b servers treat those messages, wouldn’t they be discarded?
