I’m about to draw a comparison that many of you will resist, deny, or try to argue away.

I can believe the stories of white children, women, and men who were harmed by powerful, privileged individuals without having ever experienced sexual assault myself.

    I don’t need personal proof.

I don’t need to see the documents.

I don’t need to debate their memories.

I don’t need them to make their pain more “palatable” for me to accept that harm occurred.

Because believing survivors of sexual violence costs you nothing. It does not threaten your comfort. It does not challenge your status. It does not require you to give up anything.

      Believing Black folx does.

Believing us requires you to confront the fact that the world you benefit from was built through intentional harm.

It requires you to see that the advantages you experience are not accidental.

It requires you to question the innocence you cling to.

      You debate.
      You deflect.
      You demand citations.
      You ask for “proof.”
      You look for loopholes.
You search for ways that it “wasn’t that bad.”
You reposition yourselves as confused observers instead of beneficiaries of the harm.

      You do not offer belief.
      You do not offer compassion.
      You do not offer humanity.

And that difference says everything you work so hard to hide.

      I extend compassion.

      I extend belief.

      I extend humanity.

And yet, this is the exact compassion that many white folx cannot extend to Black folx when we speak about the historical and ongoing harm caused by systems, institutions, and policies rooted in the myth of white supremacy.

When we tell you what happened.
When we tell you what is still happening.
When we tell you how it shows up in our bodies, our communities, our opportunities, and our safety.
