I can't speak Ukranian, but I have learned if I act like I understand, then when they finish speaking I have a confused face and I ask "Scho?" They explain some more and the conversation can continue. I can sometimes keep this going for up to 7 Schos.

@selzero "Scho?" is a word in Swiss-german, too. It means some kind of being astonished about something that was said. Like "really?".
