Keith Ellison, hell yeah
https://www.mprnews.org/story/2026/01/12/latest-monday-on-ice-shooting-in-minneapolis
The way he’s threading the needle of talking about the ICE / local police interactions is fascinating: his line is that Mpls Police being called to deal with ICE (e.g. “there’s an abductee’s abandoned car” or 911 call “omg ICE is at my door”) is an unlawful federal commandeering of local police resources.
I say fascinating because that line of argument has legs regardless of whether police helped ICE or pushed back against ICE.
Now he’s just tearing Trump a new one
“DHS is not above the law, and the people of Minnesota are certainly not beneath it”
Jacob Frey doing the job he was born to do: press secretary
His remarks give a hint of the lawsuit’s girders: everything about this ICE surge is abnormal and much of it is illegal, therefore this is not actual immigration enforcement, therefore the lawsuit does not hinder immigration enforcement but rather addresses an emergency
Now directly accusing ICE of racial profiling
St. Paul mayor Kaohly Her refers to this as a “federal occupation”
Again: backbone of the lawsuit is that ICE is wildly outside their legal mandate
Frey claiming police have driven down the number of ICE abductions “substantially.” Not sure who except him believes that
[I can now reveal, btw, that the request I posted a few days ago for people with firsthand knowledge of ICE impact on daycares can from the AG office]
They’re pushing their lawsuit to happen fast: filing today, asking for court hearing on emergency injunction tomorrow
Keith Ellison multiple times uses “but fraud!” to skewer feds for failing to provide support that would actually help catch fraud: “If they want to send us some forensic accountants [instead of ICE], that’s a conversation we’re willing to have”
Now Frey also saying “invasion”
Ellison thanks journalists, calling them “the •independent• press of America”
And the press conference is over.
I’m really glad to hear this news. I keep saying that we cannot and must not rely on or wait for the law or politicians to save us. However, both are important cogs in this system — and anything that offers a moment of respite is desperately needed right now, whether that’s an emergency injunction or the Trump regime faltering while they try to avoid one.
The Trump regime desperately, desperately wants the situation in Minneapolis / St. Paul to explode. Anything sand in the gears that helps prevent that from happening is a godsend — and this lawsuit certainly is sand in the gears.
@inthehands I'm really impressed by the normal humanity of these authority figures. They're making their case super well. I think the administration picked the wrong place to mess with.
@alisynthesis
You’re damn right!!

For those who aren’t local / don’t have an encyclopedic memory of 2020:
Keith Ellison and the MN AG office are the folks who successfully prosecuted Derek Chauvin. They are a crack legal team who know how to win. I’m making no bets about the short or long term outcomes of this lawsuit — especially not with a radical right-wing SCOTUS completely off the rails — but I’m confident these are some of the very best people to be leading it.
@inthehands it looks like Illinois and the city of Chicago are doing the same https://www.axios.com/local/chicago/2026/01/12/illinois-chicago-sue-dhs-ice-cbp-tactics
@inthehands unfortunately, SCOTUS has said racial profiling is fine for these clowns, so I doubt they care
