    Europe’s forests are weakening under heat, drought & pests, yet climate targets rely on them. This is dangerous says PIK Director Rockström because "countries can use their carbon sink from forests to say they're net zero without fully phasing out fossil fuels.”

      Germany’s dying forests are losing their ability to absorb CO2. Can a new way of planting save them?

      Vast swathes of the country’s trees have been killed off by droughts and infestations, in a trend sweeping across Europe. A shift towards more biodiverse cultivation could offer answers

      @PIK_climate The bark beetle is not the cause of forest dieback. It is the mortician of a dying forest. Please do not plant root-pruned trees from the tree nursery. At best, plant seedlings of old native species and let the forest do the work itself. Freely and hopefully correctly according to Peter Wohlleben.

      @vegos_f06 @PIK_climate

      I don’t know about Wohlleben, but it is certainly true that a forest health is intimately related to the biome under the soil that it lives in symbiosis with.

      You’re going to see 2/3 of all the carbon and water in the soil itself in the living biomass.

      Of the kinds of reforestation that seem to work the best it’s leaving tiny patches of old growth and let nature do its thing. Otherwise, Miyawaki.

      The website of Mr. Wohlleben. He is quite popular, but some hate him.
