Shortly after that the ripple systems that were operating (including iirc rivulet) started enabling people to trade BTC valued trust and so I started doing so with the people around me. Eventually someone I knew ( @recorderist@freespeechextremist.com here) got his hands on some via SEPA and I was able to acquire non-ripple-BTC from him -- sometime 2010-2011. The only problem was i was pretty broke 2009-2011 (was still a university student until 2010) so even when i had the abillity to trade for it i was more worried about putting out fires of high credit card, high student loans, friends/family going through crises etc. Working fulltime eventually got me out of the hole and able to get my head above water & buy some by 2012 (and arbritrage increasing amounts via mtgox/chinese currency & canadian market through a friend with family in china). by 2013 i quit my job as a programmer and travelled the country joining a rock band & volunteering at a hackerspace in #tbay [before both were shut down]
