I feel like the San Francisco Costco knows its main demographic well (old Chinese people) because it’s got:

    - a bulk pack of salted duck eggs
    - a giant pack of century eggs
    - 1.5lbs of cured Chinese bacon (like a lap cheung, but bacon. So lap yuk)
    - Giant packs of the Taiwanese instant noodles that are actually very good (A-Sha)
    - Lego set for new year firecrackers
    - packs of abalone larger than my torso

New year is coming! (In 2 months)

@SVChucko Sunnyvale has some South Indian food as good as Chennai and it certainly has my favorite snacks (any of the murukku from grand sweets brand at madras groceries)

      Also has great Chinese food

@skinnylatte I’ve definitely noticed an abundance of Asian foods in the Sunnyvale Costco. Something like half of Sunnyvale is foreign born.

My general rule of thumb is if there is a Chinese instant food or restaurant that has this name: ‘First name last name Food Name’ it is usually worth trying, because the social shame of putting your name to a product that isn’t amazing is just.. too high

Confusingly these noodles are known as Tseng’s Noodles in other shops.

Tseng and Zeng are different ways of spelling the same Chinese family name

This is diff from celebrity endorsements, which don’t mean anything (although the Jay Chou paratha is decent); it’s more of the ‘founder ethos’. I instinctively trust a food thing more when there is a name and picture of the person who first started making it. Like the chilli crisp grandma!

Other pattern recognition re foods that I rely on in Asian foods: place name and dish name.

      Betong duck noodles.

      Bentong young ginger.

      Mysore style benne dose.

Bird Shit Tree maggi noodles (actual place in Penang).

Lastly with Chinese food specifically, don’t be put off by words ‘like superior’ or ‘supreme’. Those terms map very precisely to certain cooking terms and they really do mostly mean ‘best quality’

@skinnylatte I feel like a lot of those things are distributed nationwide, or at least the Costco in my college-town in Wisconsin also carries Chinese New Year stuff. It could be a per-store thing because we do have thousands of Chinese nationals as students and professors (less now due to the whole *gestures widely* situation) which might be enough to trigger locally-relevant stocking patterns, I'm not sure how fancy Costco is with their supply chain management, but they are known to be a competant retailer.
