    I unironically approve of Microsoft rewriting all of their code in Rust, using AI, because I want their software to all fail and I want them to go out of busines.

      @Mac_CZ @cjd

      Agreed, don't touch code that isn't changing. This is why you see W2K admin screens still if you dig down deep enough. But speaking in absolutes only works in a highly static code base. Windows is in this really weird state where it's both adding and evolving functionality while carrying forward code that is 25+ years old.

      A multi pass process implemented using LLM tools will be more successful than giving it to one thousand engineers to craft because humans make mistakes.

      @chromeratt @cjd Rewriting working code, just for the sake of rewriting it is always bad idea and it always brings in new bugs. New stuff should be only used for the new code.

      P.S. C++ is superior to Rust.

      @cjd @Mac_CZ

      The (seemingly) willfully ignorant chatter about this on LinkedIn is disappointing. One guy with "security expert" in his job title says there is no reason to rewrite Windows functionality in Rust except to make the fan boys happy. I suppose he thinks Typescript is a waste of time too.

      I suppose a self taught web focused security "professional" you might not truly understand the memory management and type safety make an application more secure. But you should be AWARE.

      Except the part where they insert a tiny little bug that is going to be fabulous in a couple of months, especially when nobody can find it :D

      @cjd @Mac_CZ yeah. This is spot on what LLMs are good at.

      First thing Microsoft has ever done that I can honestly say I approve of.

      Microsoft SW will be much worse in the near future. Is this the dumbest possible move?

        Attached: 1 image Microsoft is using AI to replace all their C/C++ code with Rust by 2030. Is that actually possible? What could go wrong? Microsoft’s strategy relies on a new "North Star" metric: 1 engineer, 1 month, 1 million lines of code. 😱 https://www.linkedin.com/posts/galenh_principal-software-engineer-coreai-microsoft-activity-7407863239289729024-WTzf/ Rust is good, but this approach seems incredibly difficult. Given the risk of AI hallucinations, aiming for a million lines of code per developer feels like an 'Apollo-program' level of difficulty and an excessive task 😱
