I have always said, and will continue to say, that to thrive a social platform needs fandom.
As a little look into why, Ogilvy produced a report into fandom behaviour online and it is a really really interesting read (but of course you have to sign up).

1. A compass diagram by Ogilvy titled: Fandom mapped by emotional weather and fan behavior. There are a number of results and a large explanation on how the data was capture (AI, of course). But the most extreme results are the 'Stardew Valley' fandom which is the most comforting, 'Heartstopper' which is the most participatory, 'Donald Trump' as the most protective, and 'Nicky Minaj' as the most chaotic.
