I'm setting up a new MacBook, and I need #LibreOffice obviously. It occurred to me that it might be available in the App Store, which would be slightly more convenient than a separate download. It is ... for £8.99. What on earth is going on?!

@mike Yes, there is a small fee for the Mac App Store version, to cover the costs of putting it there, and implementing some macOS-specific improvements: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2022/09/19/the-document-foundation-releases-libreoffice-on-apples-mac-app-store/ – Of course, it will always be free directly from our website.

@Woodsie111 Yes, it can open Microsoft Office/365 documents: https://www.libreoffice.org/discover/libreoffice/ – Note that it doesn't include an email client, though.

@mike @libreoffice tech novice here, read a little about LibreOffice on here. Is it Microsoft Word compatible? Can you also read Outlook files in it? Sadly need to be able to read those files but don't want to pay for Office as would prefer to use LibreOffice if possible. Thanks.

@mike You can search Bugzilla for "macOS" to find specifics, although they're often very technical. Also see this: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2025/12/04/welcome-dan-williams-new-libreoffice-developer-focusing-on-ui-ux/

@libreoffice Yes, I did get it from the website instead. Are the MacOS-specific improvements documented anywhere? (I don't see it described in the App Store itself.)
