@artemis Losing freelancing is also reducing economic mobility and flexibility. Once well paid part time/freelance work disappears there's less opportunity to be a work from home parent, and you get into the cycle of child care costs and latchkey children growing up without parents.

    or gargoyles.

Humans will never entirely stop making things—on their own time, when they are able to, but all that experience will be lost. It's grim. It's like it is intended to shrink our capacity for artistry (making OR enjoying).

Yeah, & this is exactly what kills everything.

People don't think that much about that stuff, & if they have their own business, it's an expense they think they can do without.

But as that work continues to disappear (at a faster rate now, though this is the level that's been torn down the most already), what we lose isn't just income. It's all the opportunities people have to work in a craft they care about.

@artemis The whole design culture is going to be subsumed into "Sure it'll do" aesthetic to save money. Every little flyer will be a canva template. Photolayouts on magazine covers will be increasingly composed by ai design from available stock libraries that have sold out to the monkey. None of it will look as good as before, but "sure it'll do" because you've saved on the price to pay a freelance. And wow you didn't even need to get the materials ready till the night before press.

@artemis All the "Just in time" people like me you call at the absolute last minute, but local photographers, local designers, anyone in the middle space has just lost all their clients. Artists can always create, but tradefolk are getting hit hard and instantly. What do you even re-train as when adobe sold your workflows to a cymbal clapping monkey and its venture capital burning plagiarism engine.

@artemis I'm already seeing that at a freelancer level. Everyone has gone.

Do you know how much human skill we stand to lose? You don't have to immediately replace all artists—replace enough of them & eventually the experience & knowledge will evaporate as only a handful of chosen creatives get to practice their craft & new people don't come up with the same type of experience because the opportunities don't exist.

AI replacing artists is one of the worst things that could be done to us. They want us all to be slaves without a single bit of hope in our head.

      Fuck AI.

Guillermo del Toro made a point to finish off remarks at the Gotham Awards with "fuck AI" after talking about all the *humans* whose creativity made Frankenstein great.

Generative AI is intended to bring about the death of artistry, to make it non-viable to BE an artist, because the idea is to have machines do everything more cheaply.
