The red shinkansen is the Komachi which is linked to the Hayabusa on the Tokyo to Morioka stretch before being decoupled and heading on to Akita on rails modified from the existing narrow gauge.
It's the only shinkansen I've been on which passes through railroad crossings and a switchback (at Omagari).
