@sickburnbro Side note: I'm astonished at how retarded people can be to not keep local copies of everything they value that they put on line. Kevin McKernan lost a Terabyte of research data which he valued at $200k. All it would have cost him is around $150 at the time (now a mere $85 -- https://www.newegg.com/kingspec-1tb-ne-series/p/0D9-00...).

@totalslothdeath it's because backing up is work and it's hard for people to put in the effort to do it.

@RoBu @totalslothdeath yes, but it's just like changing oil in a car - when you haven't done it before, there are a lot of unknowns. But it's also like one of the easiest things you can do for auto matainence

@sickburnbro @totalslothdeath It's less difficult than ever. I've maintained my personal, professional, and extraneous archives since '92 via file managers and basic terminal commands in DOS, then Debian, then two BSDs.
In the '90s, I relied on floppies and tapes, then CD-RWs. Thumb drives and external HDs since the aughts eased everything.
All anyone really needs is good, fundamental software and a daily routine.
