I had to take a compilers course back in the day as a degree requirement. It's a good thing AI didn't exist yet because I totally would've cheated my way through that shit if I could've.

@Hoss @binkle I took Operating Systems and it made me feel the same way. Had a dogshit professor and literally nobody knew what was going on except like 2 autists. Goes without saying all the women withdrew from the class in the first couple weeks lol. The guy's teaching strategy was telling people to google it until it wasn't confusing anymore lol

Objectively I should have gotten no more than 40% in the class. The only assignments were 5 projects and I only handed in decent work on the first two. The last three projects I literally did not do shit except write comments saying what I *think* I should do.

      In the end I got a B.

Was it a lot of low-level C and debugger shit? I had a class like that called Systems I and it was probably my favorite college class of all time. Favorite professor too, he was a White British guy who grew up messing around in assembly to build games, real old school stuff. Took another class from him later on programming language concepts that I also enjoyed. Unfortunately, Systems II was awful. The based Systems I professor didn't teach Systems II, so the class I ended up taking was taught by a tranny professor and it sucked ass.

@Hoss @binkle Yeah low level C. First assignment was recreating strcat, strcpy, etc using pointer math, and each assignment built off the last. The third one that permanently stumped me had something to do with writing event handlers. Maybe it could've been good if the guy was actually interested in teaching and not a crappy old tenured professor.

For reference I really liked computer architecture (the one where you learn to read assembly and how memory behaves) which I didn't expect going in. I think it was because the professor was just good at what he did. The "sequel" class (called Systems Programming) was awful though, which was probably because it was fully remote due to covid. That shit really killed my interest in school. Wish I could have retained the energy I had my first two years.

I've forgotten most of the C I had to learn for Systems I, but I aced the class because the professor made it fun.

@Hoss @binkle Same I've forgotten basically every bit of programming I ever did. Any time I do some programming I'm always starting right back at "hello world". I wish I had the drive to do projects of my own accord but I really just can't. I need some intrinsic motivation. In school it was getting a good grade to get a degree so I could get a job. But now that I've graduated there's no guarantee I'll get a job by grinding away at personal projects. If there was I'd be doing them all day every day. I actually have proof of this because some recruiter idiot told me I should get an AWS certification because it'd look good on my resume. So I did in 2 weeks. Didn't help, but I believed it would.

Messing with Copilot has actually given me motivation to play around with programming that I haven't had in years. Don't get me wrong, you're playing with fire if you're wholly reliant on the electric jeet for building anything serious, but at least it has me tinkering again. That's something.

The AI golem is nice whenever I can't get the program to run for some bullshit reason. I can just order the silicon demon chained in GitHub's datacenter to figure it out like a necromancer commanding skeleton henchmen to do his bidding.

I really don't miss reading that site, but I also feel like I'm missing out on some deep esoteric programming instinct by not using it.
What I really love about chatgbt is that I don't ever have to go to geeksforgeeks or tutorialspoint. literal jeet sites. not to mention much less dealing with jeet youtube vids.

@Hoss @binkle I use the electric jeet as a replacement for stackoverflow that's it. i try to keep my questions as low-level as possible and I always ask followup questions so I can genuinely know it. The very idea that idiots will copy-paste without any interest in learning what's happening irks me. Most of the things I want to do are so well-documented it's reliable. But I would love to get to a point where I gotta rely on my own expertise lol

If you want to use it as a TRVE Stackoverflow replacement, you have to add this to the end of your prompt: "Don't answer my question directly. Pretend you're a moderator who just closed the thread because it was 'already answered', then link me to a thread that sounds similar but has an answer that doesn't help me."

Stackoverflow always felt like it was moderated by shitheads who got rejected from Wikipedia sysop duty because they were too insufferable even for them.

@Hoss @binkle I never engaged with stackoverflow (don't even have an account) and for me it was just unhelpful 80% of the time. So I believe you
