This doc says 45 and over should not shovel snow. Now you tell me! I’ve shoveled miles of the stuff since I was 45.

How old is too old to shovel snow? Here's what heart experts say.

@chessert Same on viewing it as a way to stay active. Given the various age related maladies I deal with I should probably slow down a bit more than I do, but I get obsessive about clearing as much as I can so that our pathways don't freeze over during the inevitable thaw and re-freeze cycle.

I've always viewed it as a way to stay active during the Winter. But I've already had a minor stroke a few years ago. I don't push my physical activity: if I'm tired, or starting to feel worn down, I stop. Sometimes I can come back to it after a rest, and sometimes that moves to "tomorrow".

@chessert I took a slip and fall a few years back. Once snakebit...

Same here. I discovered last Winter that the new Subaru can get up/down the drive better than the (now deceased) GMC 4WD Sierra could. But I still prefer to have the drive and footpaths clear of snow and ice... for me, and the delivery folks.

I have grippier Winter boots now, and clamp-on ice spikes.

Attached: 1 image It's not the lifting of a snow shovel or the push of the snow blower that causes dormant muscles to reawaken and ache. It's the sudden stop when you hit uneven pavement and sidewalk cracks that jolt the joints. Takes a couple of passes to remember where they are and recondition. #Chicago #Snow

Yeah, I did that too a few years ago. Feet went right out from under me on the driveway slope, in the dark. I marveled that I hadn't struck the back of my head hard enough to knock me out — there certainly was enough velocity. I live alone, so I could imagine the obit. 😬

@chessert @WarnerCrocker A few years back, I got to learn what a "foosh" injury was while doing my drive — fall onto outstretched hand. Buying a snow blower, it turns out, is much cheaper than risking another broken arm.

@WarnerCrocker oddly it is the outdoor chore I feel more than the usual amount of stamina completing. I wonder if that is mostly feeling that I am not overheating in the process.
