Okay, *now* we're going for a reboot. If you never see me again, just wait longer; you aren't getting rid of me. - Johnny Peligro likes this.

@prettygood have a happy reboob. I have to see if I'll remove plymouth or not, it seems it requires too much handheld setup unless all you wanna use is the bgrt theme. prettygood likes this. -

@mischievoustomato I never bothered with it, I like seeing boot messages, lets me diagnose things that are broken but not stopping the boot process. -

@prettygood I never have issues and the lines are more or less the same i've read a hundred times across distros, so I prefer the pretty boot. If stuff breaks I'll have to diagnose regardless so I can just disable the thing. -

@prettygood but yeah I tried the KDE theme... no font for the password prompt for luks unless i do some wizardry... tried the text theme... it's the same but worse actually since it doesn't register my keystrokes. Weeeeeeeeeeeird -

@mischievoustomato I think I'm using the breeze grub theme, I think I enabled it just to figure out how to enable a theme and just left it. -

@prettygood @mischievoustomato boot messages are aesthetic tbh, especially if they have nice decorations around them and aren't just the bare vga chrome most linux distros ship with prettygood likes this. -

@allison @prettygood to each their own, it's something that i don't really have to see, but eh, if I can make stuff slightly better I just go for it. prettygood likes this. -

@prettygood @mischievoustomato ok but have you considered picrel (you're not gonna get the sun-style openfirmware consoles on modern pcs but this is damn near the next best thing) prettygood likes this. -

@allison @prettygood the font looks fine but i don't really see anything GREAT beyond the freebsd bootloader, i do find that sexy -

@mischievoustomato @prettygood it's freebsd's default efi bootloader using the (originally made by sun) console font gallant. imho sun, sgi, and next had the best taste for aesthetic boot screens out of unix vendors. prettygood likes this. -

@mischievoustomato @prettygood I love the font, I actually have it set as my terminal font on the laptop. That and sony-fixed are my two favorite bitmap fonts which are free and clear to use. prettygood and Johnny Peligro like this. -

@allison @prettygood nice, nice. My previous "favorite" font was SF Mono. I found it to look just plain nice. Though I don't wanna really just do copycat stuff (though I do have a macOS-like setup on Gentoo+KDE, because it genuinely does feel ergonomic to me).
Currently I just use Fira Code. It looks stylish and is quite readable. I've also used Input Mono, Commit Mono, and some others.prettygood likes this. -

@allison @mischievoustomato I enjoy the Fira font family. But for a terminal I'm addicted to Terminus because it looks good at tiny point sizes so I can cram more text on the screen at once. Johnny Peligro likes this. -

@mischievoustomato @prettygood Fira Code is basically a cleaned up screen optimized monospace version of FF Meta, definitely a solid choice IMHO as far as outline fonts are concerned -

@allison @prettygood @mischievoustomato Does it have square-pixel braille (u2800-u28FF) glyphs? https://github.com/fcambus/spleen/issues/44
If not pls do encourage the font designer to switch to full-pixel 'braille' glyphs. Vast benefits for semigraphics, no drawbacks for blind people! (No, really!)In conversation permalink Attachments
