    Yeah, I love PHP.

The jokes are funny until you realize it powers most of the internet - and Pixelfed, Loops, FediDB, and every federated platform I've built.

At the end of the day, we're all serving HTML or JSON.

    The language doesn't matter.

    Shipping does.

@dansup My career's been almost completely .NET apart from mobile and one PHP job I got even though I'd never coded it (I did tell them that). Damn was it simpler and easier than .NET! Not in a disparaging way - there was just far less bullshit. No planned obsolescence either, no endless debates about how to do something, you just did it. Only thing was trying to choose best MVC framework - CodeIgniter getting too old, risks over ownership, Laravel great but how long would it be supported etc.

@freequaybuoy I agree, and I think Laravel is here to stay.

Taylor Otwell built several SaaS around it, and interestingly enough, he came from a .NET background.

He posted a few years ago that he made over $10 million from his Laravel ecosystem which is really impressive.

@dansup but some technology choices do matter because they drastically affect your UX. For example, if you use client-side rendering (especially with React) where server-side rendering would suffice, you're making your users stare at spinners for seconds at a time.

@dansup If we were given $1 every time someone said PHP was dead, we would have more than enough to finance the entire Fediverse.

I work in web development, and although I use Vite and VUE, I still develop the backend in PHP, in my case using CodeIgniter, not counting the few WordPress blogs I maintain.

@grishka great point, and while PHP is technically SSR, I do use SPA architecture for my projects that impact accessibility, SEO and UX.

I am making progress on that though, the new Pixelfed UI can be SSR or fallback to SPA

A lot (perhaps most) of the easily Web — in the late 1990s and 2000s was powered by PHP.

@dansup That's why the VLC 2.9 Foundation uses it. PHP is the best.
