[1/?] Well, this is a pickle...

I was recording a video about Zorin OS 18, using a fresh installation on the Framework 13 laptop, and trying to approach things like a new Linux user might. Discovering. Specifically an "every day" user coming from Windows.

In the middle of the "Welcome Tour" the display started graphically glitching out. It persisted when I stopped OBS. Persisted after I rebooted. I did a few test runs with OBS before recording for real and everything was fine...

[2/?] I went to the Software Store (GUI), hoping to see some updates: nope.
But then I went to the command line and did an apt-update/apt-upgrade, and 50+ packages were ready to be updated. That's irritating...

This obviously crushed my hopes that a Zorin OS user would never need to resort to the command line, you know?

So after a system update and another reboot, the graphics artifacting seems to have disappeared...

[3/3] What I'm struggling with now is: do I leave this in the video? I want to paint a realistic picture of using Linux, of using this distro, but I have a hunch this is not normal behavior for a stable Ubuntu-based distro running on proven AMD hardware...

But I don't want to lead people astray either. Damnit!

If only those updates had shown up in the (GUI) Software app. I kinda thought Zorin OS would be the golden ticket for a lot of Windows converts. Not so sure all the sudden.

      THOUGHTS?

      UPDATE:
      Huh. I'm not alone!
      https://forum.zorin.com/t/screen-glitching-and-artifacting-on-ryzen-apu-laptop/40144

Same issue, same Ryzen APU... But it's worth nothing I didn't have this experience using Fedora and Bazzite on the same hardware for many months.

@hp That's great insight, THANK YOU! I want to give this distro a fair representation. I'll do another clean installation and just let it sit for a bit. Admittedly I jumped in ASAP after installing OBS.

@killyourfm maybe try it again and see if maybe it'd have populated a list of updates if left to it's own devices.

Like, maybe package-kit was just still working on it. Gnome-software should have shown all those updates, unless zorin really broke something badly that is.

I don't use Zorin, but if they use the same gnome stack as Fedora (and a custody search suggests that they do) I suspect it was just still working on it.

@killyourfm When my mom decided to migrate her Windows 10 PC to Linux, I just installed Debian with KDE, then added flatpak support and she's been fine. The KDE Discover software store is surprisingly easy to navigate and use.

If it were me I might leave it in. Is it possible that the software center just hadn't checked for updates that day so it missed what you found with apt?

@gerowen That's very possible, or it was checking in the background but wasn't surfacing that activity. BUT if I was a new Zorin OS user unfamiliar with command line, and had this same chipset... talk about a terrible first Linux experience, right?

(Also, I vastly prefer KDE everything too...)

UPDATE 2: The horrible graphical artifacts are NOT IN THE RECORDING!? Even though they were present at boot, and after I stopped using OBS...

@killyourfm I think both options would be fine! I have been trying a lot of distros, and there is no golden - no issue - solution, but I don’t experience more issues with Linux, than I do with other systems at work.

I have had a really great experience with Zorin, and it’s my first choice when people ask for advice on a good entry distro. But I would always advise people to reach out to people who can help them. My dad is helping local seniors, and sometimes remove windows for Linux Mint.

@killyourfm he is, and he’s part of a national group of champs, who help seniors with their computer-problems as voulenteers through a senior citizen’s association.

“Funny” story, my dad ended up using Linux Mint for the purpose because of the pre-installed app’s simply worked best with the seniors needs and their e-mail addresses. In Denmark a lot of the seniors have their e-mail through their old phone company, and these private mail services are best supported by Thunderbird.
