@pry Well, over the last 30 years internet advertising transformed the tech industry into an industry that actually made things that provided value to an industry that creates shiny baubles whose primary purpose is surveillance, and it is the reason that those hideously addictive brainwashing machines cynically called "social media" exist
All the brightest computer science, data science, and psychology minds of a whole generation have been wasted on building an incredible surveillance apparatus designed to make people more likely to click on ads, and all the developments in this field are now finally being adopted by authoritarian regimes to make sure that, in the words of Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, "the citizens are on their best behavior at all times"
I don't think internet advertising is bad in and of itself but fuck I really don't want to live in the world it has created- :blobancap: :blobcattrans: :blobancap: :blobcattrans: :blobancap: :blobcattrans: likes this.

@scathach destroying civilization how?
I agree that ads almost always have a negative effect on my view of the company advertising and also often of the place doing the advertising.
I also think that there does seem to be a genuine usecase of advertising ???
I'm not certain what to think here. I also think certain forms of advertising should just obviously be illegal, like advertising directly to kids or advertising gambling

@pry It's also a business model that's quite literally destroying modern civilization
On a personal level most ads are so crass, jarring, and generally unappealing that I find their presence offensive and specifically go out of my way to not buy the products being shilled -

@pry He's reluctant to integrate ad blocking because of "ethical concerns" -
