@ambiguous_yelp @LilaHexe you can use the ls1028a blob free but not for the built in display output (the DP driver needs a blob... not the GPU). you would need some internal gpu/framebuffer card to work around that. back in the day i thought about fpga, siliconmotion, or similar. but there was too little interest to make it viable financially.

@mntmn @LilaHexe A nice thing about open design is anyone can come and make whatever cpu module work as long as they have the skill.
I was under the impression the ls1028a was completely blob free so thanks for the clarification.
For what its worth I would seriously consider a reduced performance and high cost if it could guarantee no proprietary firmware.

@LilaHexe @mntmn They used to provide option for several cpu modules, one of them I think had no proprietary binary blobs, now they only sell the cpu module that has proprietary firmware, i wonder why they reduced the options

@ambiguous_yelp @LilaHexe we reduced the options because the old ones were just far inferior in terms of performance and features. and the almost-blob-free one (ls1028a) only a handful of people were interested in. it's still for sale at crowd supply and mouser though. with the upcoming qualcomm modules we'll have some cheaper options again though.

@LilaHexe @mntmn Yeah it is I thought it would have gotten a little bit cheaper with the MNT reform next but being open hardware if someone can make it cheaper they probs will. Theres also the reduced lifetime cost from it being modular and repairable but idk I'll have to see I'm saving up years ahead of time but I think I want one of these laptops more than any other
