Amazon estimates that up to 500,000 warehouse jobs could eventually be replaced by robots. I'm all for progress, but not at the expense of hundreds of thousands of families. We have no plan in place to help these people retrain. #BasicIncome and unions for all. #1u

@sr3 @RealJournalism I despise the conservative doublespeak of cheering on the idea of AI replacing "unskilled" jobs (there's no such thing) but then turning around and telling anyone who's struggling to make ends meet to "just go get a job, Amazon is always hiring."

@RealJournalism sadly I don't believe the current US administration is even remotely interested in talking about it.

Say "Cutting on unemployment" and they're all on board.

What a sad sad world we live in today.

@pendell @RealJournalism growing up in the 80s and 90s American seemed like the coolest place ever.

Strong, rich, free, lots of cool stuff (internet was an example), best media (one of the reasons I speak English). It felt like that feeling would never end.

Then Al-Gore got screwed and so did we all. Then 9/11. Then Bush again, economic crisis, then the orange fascist.

It is so weird to me now that I have it better.

@pendell @RealJournalism land of the free if you're rich or a corporation.

I'm not an American and I feel for you, I really do.

Let me give you my perspective as a 40 year old Portuguese born and raised:

@lin11c @pendell @RealJournalism I hope America becomes actually great again and you don't feel the need to leave your communities.

      This is so damn awful.

@pendell @RealJournalism And my country is one of the poorest in Europe.

But I live without fear. I'm fine leaving my kid in school. I do not want to buy a firearm. I do not fear of having to go to debt over my health. Or losing my job and starve.

It isn't paradise, far from it. But really I can't complain much.

Most Americans I've met were lovely people that I hope are doing well and I am not saying any of this to gloat.

I really wish we had the America that led the way in so many ways.
