    • Fediverse Report

I have two Ghost sites I operate for which I turned on Fediverse posting.

I have hopes that they might support the Article long form AP type, but until it’s supported by Mastodon it won’t be visible to most. Getting @darius’s Hometown stuff merged would be great.

Would love to see these two pieces of software work together.

      Fediverse Report – #140
      from Laurens Hof
Mastodon is working towards making one of the longstanding pain points of the fediverse a thing of the past, with the new ability to show all replies to a post. Bonfire is making strides with their Open Science Network platform, and Ghost is now the most popular server software on the fediverse.

@boris @darius @fediversereport Mastodon supports the `Article` type pretty well; it's kind of like an RSS feed with just the title and first paragraph. I agree, it would be very nice to see the full text in your own server.

@boris @darius @fediversereport long-form text has been one of the important projects we worked on at the Social Web Foundation.

@boris @darius @fediversereport with replies: we have had the `replies` collection in ActivityPub since its development. I'm really glad the Mastodon is going to use it and support it.

@boris @darius @fediversereport question for you, Boris as well as maybe @snarfed.org : is there a lexicon for long-form text in ATProto? And does it bridge across BridgyFed as `Article`?

@evan @darius @snarfed.org there are several apps with long form lexicons.

They do not bridge as article, there’s an issue for it.

(you asked this previously, nothing changed since then)

@boris @darius @snarfed.org faulty memory I guess! Thanks. I'll try to review the GitHub issues rather than polling you as an information source!

@boris @blaine @snarfed.org we have a long-form text FEP that Threads, Mastodon, Write Freely, WordPress, and Ghost all support. It was developed collaboratively by these teams. `preview` is a compromise for Twitter-like services that don't want to assemble a representation out of the Article properties.

@evan @boris @darius @snarfed.org as a matter of principle, though, they *could* be bridged as article. I have not looked at the source lexicons, but it turns out it's not complicated to convert from one semantic-and-byte ordering of "title", "author", "body", etc to another.

@blaine @evan @snarfed.org yep, totally doable, and I started looking at the Bridgy code to detect lexicon types and do a transform.

The issue previous to Ghost coming on scene is that there has been little movement in display.

Snarfed has a Sept issue about “bare” Article type with Ghost using summary https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/issues/2091

AS2 has a preview field! It didn't really get used in the wild in the fediverse much, so we didn't use it, but we're starting to see conversation (and implementation!) around long form content, eg ...

@evan @boris @darius @snarfed.org I feel strongly that this question: "is there a lexicon for long-form text in ATProto? And does it bridge across BridgyFed as `Article`?" is analogous to translation for any human work of translation.

Is FEP-b2b8 a subtle piece of AS2 poetry, whose ineffable metadata simply can't be captured in Lexicon? Maybe. Without wanting to minimize the work, my bet is that it's probably more like ISO-8859-1 vs CP1252.

@evan @boris @darius @snarfed.org maybe it's somewhere in-between, and the translation project is more like translating a scientific textbook from one language to another.

The hard part in any truly decentralized project is going to be that the end-user *experience* of the data is going to differ from one user to another. I've argued in the past that *design and UX* standards are way more important than *encoding* standards, if we want all of this to work for people.

@blaine @boris @darius @snarfed.org I think there has to be a lexicon in order to store the data in ATProto, right? Having three is fine if you're bridging from ATProto to AP; it's good to have a dominant one if you're bridging from AP to ATProto. Although maybe it's possible to represent the same data in different lexicons in ATProto? I don't know the standard well enough to say.
