Unrealized losses mean simply that, losses not yet realized. Imagine you bought $10,000 of Dogelonmarsfart Inu token, expecting it to go to the moon. It pumps 2x and your coins are now worth $20,000, you now have $10,000 in unrealized gains. Then the Bogdanoffs make the call and Dogelonmarsfart Inu dumps so hard your investment is now only worth 1/100th of the initial principal, or $100. Because you're a ride or die diamond hands ape to the end, you still don't sell, you now have $9,900 in unrealized losses.

Unrealized loss is when they bought a security for more than it's currently worth, but they're still holding the security, so the loss isn't taxable.

Wealth is just the measure of the current valuation of your assets. Realized/unrealized losses/gains is more of a function of tax accounting.

@Hoss @IlDuWuce Considering that most hoarded wealth is not in cash, does that mean most wealth is unrealized wealth?

They're down on the assets but have not realized the loss because they haven't sold them off. If and when they do, it'd go down in the books as a loss. In some cases it's strategically advantageous to sell off positions in the red at the end of the year to use as a tax offsetting loss.

So they made losses but the economy is LARPing as if the're not real losses yet somehow. If you could juat diamondhands those you can just sell those securities off drop by drop to not suddenly go boom (right?)
