@itsfoss He originally provided copies of the source code of Unix to universities marked "Love Ken", which was the base of BSDs - although soon most was rewritten and the OS's were not longer Unix. -

@blenderdumbass @itsfoss No BSD is libre - all of them are proprietary software, containing many proprietary programs and unlicensed files.
The BSD developers needed a lot of convincing by rms and others to not release it as 100% proprietary software.
Ideally many files under a free license would allow files to be copied and used elsewhere, but too bad it's mostly bad code that isn't worth copying. -
