    Apparently, YouTube is taking down videos that explain how to perform nonstandard Windows 11 installations. Videos from several creators have been removed on topics including how to install Windows 11 without logging into a Microsoft account and how to install it on unsupported hardware. Microsoft is doing everything to push away at least power users from its OS.

    This is a good time to adopt Linux desktop if you can as Microsoft is going full crazy.

      @raymaccarthy @nixCraft It won't stop working if you don't let MS have a backdoor to push unwanted changes to your installation. It will keep working as you installed it, forever.

      It's sane to install without an MS Account, if you need Win 11.
      It's not sane to use unsupported HW as it will stop working.
      HW is unsupported -> Linux
      But if a business needs a Windows program, then they need a new computer.

      Linux Mint with Mate and a suitable theme has been fine for any windows or Mac user for about 10 years unless there is a business program they are locked into such as Sap, Payroll or maybe Sage Accounts. There are reasonable accounts packages on Linux.

      @raymaccarthy @nixCraft I thought I was clear about "if you don't let MS push..."

      Calling it a "security update" doesn't change that. You don't let them. The Windows security model is and has always been that there is no meaningful local privilege separation, so the OS is not attack surface unless you're using remote-facing services or software that ship as part of it, which you could instead just opt not to use.

      "It won't stop working if you don't let MS have a backdoor to push unwanted changes to your installation."
      Then you can't use it on the Internet.

      It's unsupported. A "Security" update will eventually brick unsupported Win 11 installs. Better off with unsupported Win10 (as it won't brick) or migrate to Linux.

      @raymaccarthy @nixCraft For a lot of users, existing software is all they want. And the OS is not processing your email or websites you browse. It's largely irrelevant to your security.

      @dalias @nixCraft
      If MS has no ability to update your W11, then you have no long term security. It's only useable with existing software, no new installs, no internet or email.
      So "if you don't let MS push…" then you need a mac or Linux or a Windows install in aspic were NOTHING is updated and there there is no Network access, certainly not webpages or email.
      If it's WII on unsupported HW and there are updates (and it's nearly impossible to know what they really do), then eventually it Bricks.

      @raymaccarthy @nixCraft Um, because it's what they already have? Because it's what their computer came with?

      Sure stick with Win10 or even 7 if that's what you have and you're happy with it.

      @dalias @nixCraft
      If existing SW is all they want, with no internet or updates, then they can stay on Win10, or even more productive Win7.
      Why would they upgrade unsupported HW to Win11?
