I use #wikipedia daily and supported it financially many years because if I benefit I absolutely want to “give back” if I can. But a few years ago I became aware of how unfairly the cohort of maintainers behave. I continued to donate every now and then up till when I realized the management of this project was complicit so I drew the line. The other day I wanted to fix a typo, and that’s when I noticed I couldn’t! I have no idea what I did that triggered in 2023 a ban of 4 years and 1 month 🤨
If anyone who follows me or sees this understands any of the data I screenshotted from #wikipedia and can explain or show me where to look or what, I would be grateful. I’ve tried to understand and it’s been a source of frustration.
@koalie you're block by IP address. The "colocation Web host" suggests that the IP block is used for CloudFlare hosting, which would mean it's usually bots, and not people, editing from that IP. Are you using a VPN or is there some other reason it would think you're dialing in from a data centre? Regardless, I think logging in with a real account should let you edit, regardless of your IP.
@evan as far as I know, no VPN but someone here just suggested that the iPhone “private relay” being enabled might be a cause. I am definitely logged in with my account, though and see the 3 notifications attached to it (none of them about being blocked, actually).
@evan no, I don’t. It will be the second TPAC I miss in 25 years! This year I will be taking my then-18-year-old to Japan the month following TPAC, as a birthday present, and so to keep a reasonable carbon footprint, I’ll attend TPAC remotely. @karlcow
