De-Banking has happened to numerous conservative influencers in the UK, US, and Canada, over the last few years. The difference was, those people were not likely to be funneling their funds to proscribed terrorist groups .
@RadicalCartoons@TriptychTwinsRidesAgain I see where you're coming from, but I have problems with debanking. If this couple have sent money directly to a terrorist organisation, then the police need to be involved. Once we decide that *bad* people can have bank accounts frozen, everything will hinge on who decides what makes a bad person bad. Don't forget that many elected MPs think that women who know there are only 2 sexes are terrorists. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
@KeepTakingTheSoma@TriptychTwinsRidesAgain But Palestine Action are already a proscribed terrorist organisation, so if they have those words in the name of their account, then Yorkshire Building Society were obliged to close it.
Even if they didn't, Building Societies are basically private clubs, who can admit or expel who they like. There's nothing to stop any bank from googling you to find out what organisations you support with the money they bank for you. They've obviously taken the decision that supporting these two brings the Society into disrepute.
@RadicalCartoons@TriptychTwinsRidesAgain I completely understand your point. My concern is that we will have people who are denied basic services on political grounds. This is a very slippery slope. I strongly disapprove of most of our elected MPs and what they stand for, but I don't want them to be without bank accounts.
@KeepTakingTheSoma@RadicalCartoons@TriptychTwinsRidesAgain I see Stella's point absolutely, and also these people were probably the kind who would have cheered when it happened in Canada, but I agree with Soma, because it is thin end of the wedge too. This whole digital ID thing to me stinks of this shit. Govts have always been iffy, but things are bad in a way here now that is different, far more dodgy, actually, in my opinion, they are outright traitors, and I would not trust them an inch not to do this to any of us.
