    Combining Science and Technology for Growth feat. Joel Mokyr
    https://www.thepodcastbrowser.com/combining-science-and-technology-for-growth-feat-joel-mokyr/

    I realise that I've listened to at least one discussion of economic history with #JoelMokyr, one of the new #Nobel laureates.

      Podcast with Malcolm Gladwell making the case that the irrationality of humans combined with driverless cars will return the streets to walkers and cyclists.

      @gemlog
      1. I listen to podcasts while doing other things: engineering work, washing dishes, gardening. Not everything requires full attention.

      2. There are four types of economist: ideological, mathematical, experimental, and historical. I find the last most interesting.

      3. Why the Industrial Revolution happened when and where it did is one of the big questions of human history, and that's where Prof. Moklyr specialises. But it's been a long time since I listened to this podcast.

      @gemlog I have indeed read *Guns, Germs and Steel*, and I think it deserves the praise it has received. Jared Diamond does take his geographical theory of everything to some extremes though: I can sort of believe the Victorians burnt the Summer Palace rather than the Qing burning Windsor Castle because Europe has many mountain ranges and rivers, while China has plains and two main rivers; but his theory of Dominica is unconvincing.

      @gemlog I meant Dominica, the island the DR and Haiti share. He discusses it somewhere else, not in *Guns, Germs and Steel*.

      @gemlog You're right, I'm wrong. Sorry for creating confusion.

      I wonder why the Dominican Republic is so named if it's not on Dominica?
