@Natanox @janethemotherfucker unless static linking was used. linux abi stability is pretty damn good. they have a clear no-regressions policy for userspace applications.

@libreleah @janethemotherfucker Don't try to install an old one that isn't pre-installed on Linux though, the dependencies are loooooong gone. 😅

@libreleah @janethemotherfucker No it isn't.
Many 25 year old programs are broken on windows.
GNU distro's don't ship with 25-year old software - only GNU programs that have been in development for >25 years.
25 year old source code can be made to compile with some tweaks if it's any good. -

@Natanox @libreleah @janethemotherfucker there are different ABIs involved in that case. Linux as in the kernel Linux has a stable ABI.
GNU however focuses on API/source compatibility and this is reflected in the libraries you mentioned.GNU and Linux are often combined for a full system, but you have to consider them independently to be able to understand where choices related to ABI stability come from and the consequences of those choices.

@jschwart @Natanox @janethemotherfucker like i said. emulation. stick a 25 year old linux distro inside an emulator and you can run 25 year old programs perfectly.

@libreleah @janethemotherfucker Guess I just had bad luck then. The only archaic application that happily started (with the exception of a single required but still available lib) was UT 2004, everything else always complained about wrong or missing versions of glibc, gtk2 or other stuff I absolutely could not (bother to) provide.

@libreleah @Natanox @janethemotherfucker but to your point, it should be possible to take a 25 year old distro and run it with a modern kernel. I remember I've seen instances where people did things like this.

@jschwart @Natanox @janethemotherfucker depends on the program though. if your program is only doing user space things it should be fine.
if it's doing stuff in kernel level that's a bit iffy
yeah like, if it's an old driver or something, then you're a bit fucked. like say, old nvidia driver and linux still doesn't have a good free driver.

@libreleah @Natanox @janethemotherfucker generally that makes sense, but I don't think your 25 year old userspace in emulation would be depending on an nvidia driver or similar non-free driver? Or I've been missing what's going on in the emulation scene :) :)
