Ever heard of the business archives surveying officer?

Me neither. But I did learn a little here. Our daughter did have a jobs for 6 months in England ‘sorting out’ the archives for Clarks (the shoe company) so I was aware of the importance of manufacturers archives which I am sure are under pressure as companies cut budgets.

You might not have heard of the surveying officer, but it is a role integral to the preservation of the nation’s heritage. Established in 1977, the business archives surveying officer for Scotland is a unique role in the UK. It provides direct support to businesses for their historical records, as well as a reactive service for records at risk cases. Across five decades, successive surveying officers have contacted thousands of businesses and surveyed the records of more than 700 to help owners understand their significance and value, while also securing the deposit of many collections with university, local, and national archives.
