@thomasfuchs believe it or not, I was interviewed on national French radio about Sam Altman and what he said about Dyson spheres. my reaction starts with a long laugh then I say "c'est n'importe quoi" / "It's bullshit!"

@thomasfuchs a mosquito net for redirecting natural light energy? For the citizens alone? And no single anything else in the universe? 👀

@thomasfuchs I take some comfort in that I thought this was about vacuum cleaners. 🤷

@rootwyrm @thomasfuchs Exactly the people making decisions. So the sphere would definitely be built.

@thomasfuchs I did the math, and stupid doesn't begin to cover them.
And boy howdy. Freeman Dyson didn't even remotely go far enough and Kardashev was smoking crack.Any society which could even *begin* to construct such a sphere, would NECESSARILY already have power generation technology vastly exceeding the potential gain. It would be a net loss! The only people who would continue to propose such absolute idiocy would be - you guessed it - idiot grifters and politicians!

@thomasfuchs I always thought Dyson spheres were just a sci-fi trope. I didn't even know there was a paper.
