@creamqueen
ffmpeg supports it.
mpv supports it.
VLC supports it.
Most web browsers beyond Chrome support it.
Your problem is Winblows deliberately crippling free codec support, not the format itself. -

>opens webp file
>launches Microsoft edge
IrfanView doesn't support it
Windows media player doesnt support it
Microsoft photos app doesnt support it
Google Chrome, the creators of the format doesnt support it
The only support it has is to embed on websites. Nobody supports the viewing of this format. Want to see the image? Too bad. All you get is the size of the embed on your screen. Want to view the image in a new tab? Guess what, you just downloaded it without asking to. -

Funny because Windows 11 mandates full disk encryption now whereas you need to go out of your way to do the same on GNU+Linux. -

@white_male @creamqueen @sally You just boot into a live image and unlock the drive with any of the passwords or keyfiles you set.
There's little chance the luks header will become corrupted, but it can be backed up with `cryptsetup luksHeaderBackup` -

@white_male @creamqueen @sally Which component?
ActiveDirectory still can use RC4 for passwords for example.
Bitlocker defaults to XTS-AES 128-bit, but XTS-AES 256-bit & AES-CBC 128-bit & AES-CBC 256-bit are supported too; https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/intune/configmgr/protect/tech-ref/bitlocker/settings
128bit AES is regarded as a bit weak, but it really makes no different as microsoft gets the key and they provide it to any government that asks nicely. -

@Infinite_Justice @creamqueen @Suiseiseki @sally Your encryption recovery key is actually stored in your Microsoft account if you logged in with your Microsoft account while setting up Windows 11. There's a whole complicated affair on how to get it while your system is in the recover Bitlocker state.
It's completely stupid.In conversation permalink -

@sally @creamqueen @Suiseiseki I just undid the C:\ encryption from the Windows CLI.
I noticed that C:\ had no recovery key shown in the bitlocker status output, unlike manually-bitlockered drives.
So, I assume from that, that, if your mainboard and the TPM dies, then all your data is gone on C:\.
If that's the case, then I don't understand why more tech news places haven't warned customers about that.In conversation permalink
