Today I learned that there are anti drug vigilantes who are going around San Francisco spraying random homeless people with Narcan. Even if they’re not OD-ing. They’re just asleep. This is so unfashionably cruel.

The dehumanization of entire groups of people occurs even among people who consider themselves a certain way. It shows me that the default mode for many is punish those who aren’t in the in group.

The American take on homelessness just confounds me. You don’t have a home, so let me do everything I can to make sure you won’t ever have a home.

@skinnylatte Not that this justify what they are doing to homeless people at all, but it turns out that low dose Naloxone (narcon) is now use therapeutically to treat Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and related long term fatigue symptoms. Also produces vivid dreams

While they’re at it, they’re also doing everything to ensure that nobody else gets homes (by not building any) and they’ll complain ceaselessly about poop on the streets but refuse to build toilets. Just in case homeless people use drugs in public bathrooms.

Look, you can think whatever abhorrent thoughts you want about homeless people and drugs. But once you do something about this, you are in assault territory. It’s not that hard. You don’t get to feel moral about doing this to someone even if you think they deserve it.

@skinnylatte its not even just that, they prevent people from living on boats, or in RVs even on their own land. They actively want the honeless to die, source... Im homeless.

People who think and act like this truly don’t understand that other people can have different motivations. They truly believe that anyone who cares about them not being cruel, is performative. They believe that empathy is fake, and actually cruel to homeless people.

I’m disappointed to learn that this world view is real. And that it gets to inflict so much suffering on people.

@spinning_bird @agaudeul 1. It’s assault to use it on a random person who isn’t undergoing an OD

      2. It causes medical conditions when you do that at the wrong time (someone who is sleeping can have their heart rate go from 60 to 120 immediately, and they can die as it can exacerbate other conditions

      3. It is still assault

@skinnylatte I don't understand, I looked for what Narcan is and it is a medication, so I would see it as more of trying to help them ? Sorry for being naive maybe, but I don't get the cruelty. Stupidity, sure, but cruelty?

@agaudeul @skinnylatte same here, I had to look up narcan and it said it’s an OD antidote or something.

Is there anything I’m missing, or why is there a malicious intent?

@skinnylatte I remember being really taken aback by a girlfriend from NY when she talked about homeless people. In every other respect, she was liberal. But on that subject, really very right wing. And this was 35 years ago.

@skinnylatte I see. That is really very weird. Would they really get away with this if the person dies, though? How do they even get access to this medication? Are there no regulations about who can buy and administer it? What a stange place you live in.

@agaudeul they would probably get away with it because homeless lives aren’t valued.

Narcan is widely available because it is something that people are supposed to be able to help with. The result of all this is people who need it might be suspicious of anyone who genuinely wants to help.

I wouldn’t say it’s just an American problem. It’s prevalent in N America but America by far because we have let the Sacklers do this to us (with oxy). I don’t know if you know about this but Purdue pharma basically flooded the zone, got real doctors to prescribe oxy to everyone including those who just needed painkillers and they have produced a nation of people who are reliant. That’s part of the strange about this strange country to me, not the people who are suffering from addiction.
