The last time I saw my aunt in person, we both tried to shove $100 into the other person’s hands at the same time. It was the same note, and we laughed and exchanged the notes.

I guess the exception to the gifting thing is I could probably have bought her a food gift. Like something really special.

But giving a consumer item would be very weird.

There’s something there around giving moms / aunts jewellery or handbags, maybe, but like ‘I’m going to give you a ticket to this event’ or ‘I am going to give you a random candle or sock’ would probably be met with confusion.

I guess in many cultures it is tacky to give money as a gift In the Chinese culture I know it is tacky to NOT give money Coz how tf are you supposed to guess what anyone really wants? Other than cold hard cash, which everyone wants.

@matt American gift giving culture would not work if it also didn’t have the returns culture

@skinnylatte I'm a white American, and I don't like American gift-giving culture. Of course, one factor is that I'm a nerd, so I'm hard to buy gifts for. Especially now that I'm an adult with money, if I want something, I'll just buy it myself.

@skinnylatte I usually give useful gift cards, like to grocery stores or a shop I know they go to. I grew up in a German immigrant led household, so gift giving is expected, but cash is considered tacky. But as a gift receiver I want something useful, so when gift baskets were a thing, my family knew to stuff it full of shelf stable groceries, which then freed up my money to spend on things I wanted. This then morphed into grocery store gift cards.
