In response to one of Facilitated Conversations prompts regarding the book Mediocre, a participant named what many of us know but rarely put into such clear terms: the fragility of white male identity.
The list they shared as “threats” to white male masculinity included:
→ Reliance on others for basic needs
→ Feminine-coded behaviors or traits (that would portray men as “soft”)
→ Imposition or restriction of independence
→ Disobedience to authority
→ Cooperation or communal ways of living

So the question becomes: what would it mean for white men, if instead of fearing these traits, you embraced them? What kind of future could we build if cooperation wasn’t seen as weakness, but as strength? If care wasn’t feminized, but humanized? If reliance on others wasn’t shameful, but celebrated as the foundation of community?
That is the work. And it’s why conversations like these matter.

This framing is not accidental. It’s by design. White supremacy has long required a rigid, hyper-individualistic, hierarchical version of masculinity to keep its systems intact. Dependency becomes weakness. Care becomes shameful. Community becomes a threat.
And here’s the tragic irony, these so-called “threats” are actually pathways to liberation. They are the antidotes to the isolation, violence, and brittleness demanded by whiteness and patriarchy.

Let that sink in.
What’s striking here is not just the content of the list, but what it reveals: the very qualities that make us human, that allow for survival, connection, and thriving, interdependence, softness, cooperation, defiance of harmful authority, are framed as dangers to white masculinity.
