@wall0159 @thekitmalone On the one hand I like this, but I don't like that what one is playing is broadcast for anyone nearby to listen in on.
@thekitmalone raspberry pi 2 with USB FM (low power) dongle. Broadcast music to FM, tune in household radios. Control raspberry pi music with MPD. Been going for over a decade with no subscription fees (owned music already). Total cost about $300, including multiple hifi radios (some of which I got for free). Sound is almost CD quality (considerably better than a Bluetooth speaker).
I wired my home for LAN some time ago, and the whole thing is driven by a big old 24pt 3com gigabit switch that I got off eBay for something $30. I opened it up and pulled the old loud fans out of it since my wiring space is in our rumpus room. It's never had a temperature problem and it's just chugging along passing bits around the house like a champ.
@thekitmalone @wall0159 Yeah, for music it's mostly nbd, unless you're a target and the range is long enough that it's letting someone infer your habits at home from spying on the broadcast.
In a context where the device might play other audio (or might be expanded to do so without thinking of consequences), it'd be more concerning.
Totally get that for many situations but if my neighbors want to listen along to my Stevie Nicks playlist they are welcome nay encouraged
