     @thomasfuchs Just an anecdote, but: I liked the clips I saw of Murderbot on YouTube but wasn't about to go buy an Apple TV subscription because we are already drowning in subscription services.

     ... so I picked up the first book. And the next. And the next. This is the most pleasure-reading I've done in years, and it utterly displaced doom-scrolling for awhile. Pretty sure I've now spent more on ebooks than I would have spent on six months of AppleTV.

     Martha Wells. "The Murderbot Diaries." A++ would recommend.

     @thomasfuchs that, and kids send each hundreds of text messages every day.

     The average kid reads way more than when I was a kid, when they only ever read in school. Now even video games make you read!

     @thomasfuchs I am afraid this is in fact different. You do not learn basic skills by being told, you learn by practicing.

     Previous new mediums were feared but usually with poorly thought out links between fear and mechanism. Whatever you can say of records or video games, neither offered to do your homework.

     I do not teach, nor do I have children, but I do not think that people educated before LLMs understands what this is doing to education of young persons.
