@StarkRG @burnoutqueen GNU set out to be an operating system from the start, which is the operating system name includes it. Also early Debian was funded by FSF directly.

@burnoutqueen Yeah, I get it. And I get the reasoning behind the name. But so much of the workings of the system rely on systemd that the argument behind including GNU in the name should apply to that utility too.

@StarkRG @burnoutqueen Despite how bloated systemd is and how deep its tentacles go, software does not rely on systemd more than it relies on GNU.
systemd itself relies on GNU.
If you feel that the system should be called GNU/systemd/Linux, by all means call it that, as you are not excluding the primary contributor after all.
The argument is that you should call GNU, GNU and give credit to Linux when credit is due, not refer to GNU as "Linux".In conversation permalink
