@mischievoustomato @Wiz A new microcode was literally released for it two months ago, because the microcode workarounds weren't enough. It's so bad that even after the publicity died down, they still had to deal with it. Mainly because hosting providers were throwing RMAs at them left, right and center.

@phnt @mischievoustomato "Linus isn't soyjacking about it rn so it's not real" groyper.

Problem is that Intel lost big on specter and meltdown, then they shipped shitty silicone that was too hot, then they sent the CPU's pre-oxidized. If you're buying compute at a large scale, the kind that makes this investment they need viable, I'd have to ask why you'd ever consider Intel when better options exist?

@Wiz @mischievoustomato Hosting providers liked the i91{3,4}900, because they were slightly better than the AMD counterparts, but then it all fell down. Otherwise Intel is completely dead in the server market after AMD kicked them out with epyc. The new CPU for the server market aren't really that impressive.

@Wiz @phnt @mischievoustomato Barron—my son, a true genius, the finest mind—came up with the most SPECTACULAR plan ever: building 2nm CPUs using only Trump Tower Taco Bell components! He’s using the strongest nacho chips for silicon, hot sauce packets for ultra-fast data transfer, and taco shells as the base wafer—absolutely MARVELOUS engineering, folks. The so-called “experts” like Goofy Elizabeth Warren and Nasty Nikki said, “Mr. President, it’s impossible!”—but Barron proved them all to be total boneheads. Now America leads the world in chip technology, while Gavin NewSCUM and the rest look completely lost. #MAGA #TechWinning

@Wiz @phnt @mischievoustomato Total PANIC in Taiwan, folks! The moment Barron’s magnificent Nacho Architecture hit the scene—2nm CPUs made from Trump taco bowl components—their chip guys went absolutely CRAZY. TSMC, once the so-called “best,” now running around like headless chickens, not smart! Even Rocket Man is laughing at them. Phony Kamala and Gavin NewSCUM said, “Mr. President, it’ll never work!”—but Barron’s genius has left Taiwan SHAKING. America is leading, Taiwan is PANICKING, and the world is watching the GREATEST tech comeback ever! #MAGA #NachoChipsNotTaiwan

@Wiz @mischievoustomato just because 99.9% of their userbase was retarded and misused it doesn't mean it was a bad product.

It excels for situations like SWAP or latency sensitive low bandwidth database reads. It's also great for hibernation on competent Operating Systems, unlike Windows.

Most people used it as a data or regular boot/root drive which was moronic.

Or people used the hybrid drives which where a total flop. The PCIe lane splitting crippled the drives and the NAND had a terrible habit of dying.

I like it for cheaping out on SBCs by purchasing the lower RAM varients.

@phnt @Wiz i had a ryzen laptop in 2020 and i only endured on it til 2021 because i switched back to windows. I had to deal with multiple workarounds for issues like the keyboard or the touchpad not working after resume or boot, kernel upgrades bringing new amdgpu crash bugs (earliest i remember was 5.6 or 5.7 where anything 3d would crash amdgpu) rather frequently, and the straw that broke the camel's back was the 1455 drm/amd bug that halved my game fps and battery, and made the laptop always be warm. It was really bad, and I felt annoyed given that I was told that amd was super great

@vokainen099 @Wiz @mischievoustomato AMD got their drivers together in the last two generations and now nVidia is the one with shitty unstable drivers that barely work with the 50 series launch. AMD drivers were a complete meme during the late WinXP-Win8 days.

      >OpenGL compatibility features are little maintained by all hardware manufacturers.
OpenGL is used a lot in professional 3D apps like Solidworks. It's maintained since none of these professional apps use DirectX, but it lags a bit behind in driver versions and with nVidia, you are supposed to install the "professional" driver that has more OpenGL tweaks and compatibility.

@phnt @Wiz @mischievoustomato I know the developer of Quake 2 XP (Quake 2 source port) lamented that AMD's OpenGL drivers are poor on some compatibility features.

That was on Windows, however, and I don't doubt those OpenGL compatibility features are little maintained by all hardware manufacturers. Besides, we got Vulkan now

@phnt @Wiz @mischievoustomato I don't think maintenance on compatibility profiles (Say app on OpenGL 3.3 running on an OpenGL 4.5 system) is perfect at all times, and that's what I was referencing. That AMD is finally coming out on top I am very glad, but that doesn't stop the structural problem of an oligopolistic industry into which you're either team green or team red.

Clearly they can't allow OpenGL to die before everyone and everything has switched to Vulkan at least, but that will take a long time. Then it will be Zink time.

@vokainen099 @Wiz @mischievoustomato I don't see OpenGL ever dying unless something dramatic happens. It's been out for so long and while in some ways it has it's own stupidity, Vulkan isn't perfect for everything either. It's like the X protocol, you can't kill it because there's tons of legacy code hard-depending on it.

      >but that doesn't stop the structural problem of an oligopolistic industry into which you're either team green or team red.
I would really like to see Intel succeed with Ark, but I'm skeptical. Especially after they announced another round of cost-cutting and Ark hasn't been competitive and probably still won't be at least for another 3 generations. It's possible they'll kill the whole project.

Also AMD still has the typical AMD disease called horrible management. While the CPU division is doing fine, the GPU division still can't making themselves look stupid all the time. AMD managers should unironically be barred from using social media, because at this time, they are making more bad publicity than good.
