    @yomimono @CursedSilicon yeah, sameish

    really what got me is that my value was tied to my ability to earn money because i had nobody to rely on for survival. the idea seemed preposterous

      I’m an elder millennial and I remember feeling anxiety when older, established folks said stuff like “do whatever makes you happy”. In my experience it was never true. I was always being evaluated and if I had fun wrong or made a bad thing I would hear about it.

      I think it’s really hard to make that statement seem true. Maybe you have to have a lot of bad art made by established community figures hanging around.

        Something I've found building a 'retro internet service' is the absolute culture gap with younger people (early 20's) They find the project interesting but then get anxious asking "okay but what can I contribute". Like they need to "hustle" or "prove their worth to be here" I have to explain to them "do things that make you happy. Build things that bring you joy" The internet they grew up on is so *transactional* that it's just how they've come to expect it. That it wants something "of them"
