    Haul of the month

So ... some days ago someone wanted to throw this piece of furniture away.
We decided to rescue it and now it will need some slight #restauration #woodworking #antique

That is a small bar cabinet with rather nice carvings.

@cjd @mcfly no. Not with a consumer grade 3 axis machine. Not by a long shot. To get anywhere close you need a five axis mill, and at that point your shape file requires a lot more work than drawing in 2D and adding a depth to it.

And you'd still get all sorts of ugly tear-out and artefacts because a carving blade doesn't move at a thousand ripms. It's an artform. And chip carving is very simple and low barrier to entry. Piece of wood and a short, stiff, straight blade. And some time.

Impressive! Do you intend to lighten it at all, or just keep the color as it is?

It strikes me that now with CNC, everyone should be able to have furniture with beautiful carvings on it.

@cjd i plan to carefully improve the surfaces. the top surface might have to be carefully sanded and then a new layer of shellack on it.

I see some other spots, i'll ask people that know what they are doing there first.

Some hardware needs replacing. The right rear foot has broken off - its a clean break though and i have the broken off foot.

Besides that ... i want to have it stand there and give me some time and thinking and then ... lets see.

@mcfly @cjd Have you ever tried citristrip? Not sure if it handles shellac, but I've taken leaded enamel and poly off with it. I haven't done restoration in any formal way, but I did once clean an antique rocking chair a bit too aggressively. I learned that the color was mostly from dirt accumulating in the varnish, and I then learned you're not supposed to take that off antiques 😅.
