It happened a couple of weeks ago, but I have been busy moving things ahead. Here's some news! I got my Canadian citizenship certificate!

Since my mom was born in Canada, the process was very fast. The effective date is retroactively... the day I was born! It was extra fast since I wrote a letter saying I was transgender and would really appreciate it expedited. They did a 5 month process in two weeks!

If you have a parent who was born in Canada, it's very easy to get certified as a Canadian citizen, since it's verifying that "you were one all along". Here's more info: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/proof-citizenship.html

But we are in an unusual position where if you have *any* born-in-Canada ancestors, you can probably be certified as a Canadian citizen. This won't be true forever, so don't wait!

If you are trans, write a personal letter saying so and asking it to be expedited.

For more information on being a US resident/citizen trying to get out of the US, and what your options are in various countries, I highly recommend Trans World Express https://transworldexpress.org/wiki/Main_Page

The info there isn't necessarily *only* useful to trans people, but mostly is aimed at trans people, since trans people are very vulnerable right now.

Canada has many of its own problems and no place is fully safe or good. But currently Canada is looking pretty good in terms of "taking the risks to trans people seriously". We have yet to see how these will play out but:

      - A transgender woman's case is being considered for asylum https://archive.is/j8twE
      - A nonbinary person's deportation to the US was halted because they petitioned they wouldn't be safe being in the US as nonbinary https://archive.is/j8twE

These two cases are a big deal since previously it was not possible to apply for asylum in Canada as a US citizen since the US was considered a "safe country"; the general advice previously was to *not* apply for asylum in Canada because you might get turned away for a full decade for doing so. But now there seems to be a real chance of that changing!

@cwebber I too am very curious about the “any ancestor“ route. By my reading of the web site, I can‘t see how that could work. It sure looks like it isn‘t passed down to more than one generation.

My grandmother was Canadian, so I‘m about to tell my Dad that he might be eligible, or as they put it, that he has been “Canadian all along“.

But I tried the “Am I Canadian“ questions at the web site, and cannot come up with any truthful answers that lead to me being Canadian as well.

@cwebber Do you think this would also work for step-parents?
