Question to the home lab and self hosted communities: what's the go-to cloud backup service these days? I've been using Backblaze, but there have been some controversies about their future. Are those irrelevant?

Additional context: I need to run backups both from Linux (doesn't matter the tool) and Synology (their native backup tool).

    TIA (thanks in advance)

I know Hertzner is "the preferred hosting of the Fediverse", so I will add those to my analysis. Thanks.

@badnetmask Hetzner StorageBox is quiet cheap but fast.

      Wasabi S3 is also nice!

I get it, makes total sense. But off-site backup is really a requirement for me. I chose services that allows me so send encrypted data, so they can't have access to my files.

@badnetmask @stefan I have a dedicated truenas machine which simply receives datasets from my main nas every night and then weekly syncs it to hetzner box via rclone (using file level encryption and sftp)

The initial sync took about 7h but now it runs in about 5min. I use it to archive my photos/vids/docs

It’s my version of 3-2-1 backups

@badnetmask Backblaze for my Mac laptop. It’s fine for now.

Restic for key stuff off the Mac and a couple of Pis running Restic. Backs up locally to one of the Pis, daily off site to BorgBase which provides the functionality and price point I wanted. Can also be set to append only so I can’t automatically prune old off sites. Choice on my part that the overhead for that is worth the protection. Suspect this won’t work with Synology’s native tool, but Restic will handle it as a file share.

I can only answer for my humble network, but I use Tarsnap. I run only Unix systems, although I believe Tarsnap can work on Windows. And it's not for the unsophisticated user. But if you can run 'tar', you should be able to run Tarsnap.

The *best* feature, IMO, is the ability to split your key by functions. So my public server has only the "create" key, not the "delete" or "read" key. Ransomware that, miscreants!

      Run by a real cryptographer.

@badnetmask I’m using storj for backing up some files from my NAS and s3 glacier deep-archive for my photos. S3 retrieval can be very expensive but if ever need retrieve those files paying aws will be nothing compared with my other costs. Storj has an s3 compatible api and for me has been cheaper than backblaze but be aware that storj is going to introduce a minimum 5 dollar monthly payment in the next months.
